Tomsk state university
Tomsk State University is based on a solid foundation of mutual penetration of the scientific and educational process. The unique advantage of the university is the harmonious development of the whole range of humanitarian, physical, mathematical and natural sciences, which allows for expanding interdisciplinary research and the seeking of synergies in solving the most complex of theoretical and applied problems of modern economic and public life.
On May 28, 1878, Emperor Alexander II signed a decree on the establishment of the first and only higher education institution in the vast expanses from the Russian Urals to the Pacific Ocean — the Siberian Imperial University in Tomsk. It was the ninth university in Russia, and the first higher educational institution in Siberia
The Imperial, now Tomsk State University, has had a decisive influence on the formation of science, education and culture in the Asian part of Russia and is considered one of the nation’s leading universities. Today, the alumni and staff of Tomsk State University lead many universities, academic institutions, research and industrial organizations in Russia, and occupy important government posts. Graduates of Tomsk State University lead institutes and departments, laboratories and innovative companies.
Tomsk State University is one of the top Universities in Russia. Since 2013, TSU has been participating in the Project 5-100. The university always holds leadership positions in the Project. TSU is currently placed in the top quartile (25 %) of the world’s leading universities; 3rd place among Russian universities in the world Round University Ranking after Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University. In 2006, Tomsk State University became a member of the European University Association (EUA).
Tomsk is the student and research capital of Siberia. Every 8th city resident is a student, 23% — international students. 15 000 students from 73 countries are currently studying at TSU.
TSU’s opportunities in scientific and educational spheres attract partners from all over the globe. The University is firmly integrated into the global educational environment through the implementation of joint training and research programmes with leading universities and research centres in the world. Confucius Institute (IC) has been operating at TSU for more than 10 years. It is ranked in the top 20 among 500 Confucius Institutes in the world.
Research and development in the region is carried out by research divisions of Tomsk universities, academic institutes, industrial research institutes and other scientific organizations. TSU is one of the first Russian higher education institutions that chose the path of innovative activity. Innovations in TSU develop on a high-tech base: education, research and innovation centres (48 research and educational centres, 12 centres for collective use, etc.), the supercomputer SKIF Cyberia (62 TFlops). In 2010, TSU deservedly won “national research” status. The best laboratories, equipped with the most modern equipment, world-renowned scientists who conduct research at the University and in cooperation with university teams, a belt of 34 small innovative enterprises.
TSU is the leader of the world's largest SecNet network for the study of a unique “mega-installation” — Siberia. In 2018, TSU scientists became the co-authors of the discovery of ATLAS to measure the decay of the Higgs boson into b-quarks (bottom quarks) — one of the most significant achievements of CERN since the discovery of the Higgs boson. The channel of the Large Hadron Collider uses detectors based on gallium arsenide — a unique development of a team of Tomsk scientists under the guidance of Oleg Tolbanov, professor of TSU. These detectors have no world analogs.
The University actively cooperates with companies in various industries, developing training and re-training focused on the specific customer. Nowadays more than 750 companies and organizations are partners of the university, 130+ High-tech companies among partner enterprises. Work-oriented education, combined with thorough preparation enables the graduates of TSU to be easily integrated into the production process, quickly adapt and offer their own engineering solutions.
